Three intense working days in Nea Moudania is over and we are very happy in our minds and ready for the coming season. Coordinator Sjef van der Steen is making a short review on the conclusions of the meeting

This is our very first INSIGNIA video PODCAST where two members of the consortium simple TALK with each other about different subjects of INSIGNIA. This time it is the coordinator Sjef van der Steen, Netherlands and Flemming Vejsnæs, Denmark, simply talking about INSIGNIA in general. Enjoy the podcast.

At the end of this week (12-13. November 22) the INSIGNIA consortium meets in real life since long time. Main issue is to evaluate this year’s field testing on different methods to measure different types of pollution. This will become the basis of next year protocol. We are really excited. The smoker is the so to say “hidden secret of beekeeping”. We all know it is used a lot. We all use it. Even in Denmark we calculated about 14 different types of fuel used in the smokers. Denmark has now made the setup in all five apiaries. The pilot study is rather complicated, but when you first do it in practical beekeeping, then it turns out to be easy. It takes 16 min to set up a colony for the pilot study. But there is a lot of small bits and pieces you have to have control on. So, at the first setup we  have to get at sessor, an envelope, clips etc. We felt we did a rather long walk as well. But now it is up running and we are looking forward to the sampling in 2 weeks’ time.

All colonies checked at the five testing sites. Spring explodes in Denmark, with cold nights, but nice sunshine during daytime. Bee really flying. Oilseed rape and apples are in full blossoms and the colonies do explode. We need to be careful with swarming.
